viewing XPS document

Posted: 10-26-2006, 09:02 PM
I installed Vista RC1. Downlodaded the documentation
(Windows_Vista_Product_Guide_Beta_2.xps.zip). But I cannot view this document
on Vista by double clicking on this xps file. What setting is required in
VISTA to view this file?

Thanks.

Try this link:

https://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/viewxps.mspx

XPS documents should open in Vista with Internet Explorer.

I tried the link. It says Vista should be able to open the "xps" file by
default. But on my machine, the documentation xps file is not opening. I can
only see the structure in explorer.

Oh, you mean, you see XPS as a raw XML in IE? Yhat's interesting...

You could try one of the following:

1. Open XPS document directly with XPS Viewer. It's in
C:\Windows\System32\XPSViewer folder. You can run it from command line with
following syntax (one line):
C:\Windows\System32\XPSViewer\XPSViewer.exe
c:\Users\Username\Documents\My_Document.xps
Document should open inside Internet Explorer window. (God, why I want it so
much to have it's own UI as in XP version? I don't know...).

2. Try and fix file association for XPS documents:
- Select XPS document in Windows Explorer.
- Click Arrow near "Open" button on toolbar.
- Select "Choose Default Program..." option.
- Click browse button navigate to XPSViewer.exe in abovementioned path.

I tried to open the xps document through command prompt. All it does is open
the explorer and I can only see the directory structure as follows:

_rels
docProps
Documents
Resources
[Content_Types]
FixedDocSeq.fdseq

I am supposed to see this in Internet Explorer. By default I have IE7 as
part of VISTA installation.

I checked the file association and it is correct.

Any setting in IE need to be changed?

Sorry, don't have much Ideas left. Can XPS document be damaged? Did you try
another one?

If you need a test XPS document, you can open "Microsoft XPS Document
Writer" printer properties and click "Print Test Page" button to make one.
Or just print something... anything to this virtual printer.

I'm assuming you are using Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater, which is required.

Try going to All Programs, Default Programs, Associate File Types, scroll
down to the XPS extension. The default program should be "XPS Document
Viewer" (at least it is on mine). If not, try changing it.

Good Luck.
