Virtual device driver failing

Since upgrading from XP Home to XP Professional, I
receive a message when trying to access some software
that reads: 16 bit windows subsystem
t. an installable virtual device driver failed dll
initialization. Choose 'close' to terminate application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
