Default virtual memory minimum too low in XP Home

All of a sudden, I started getting a system slow down and
virtual memory warning messages. The last one was -
virtual memory minimum too low ... system low on virtual
memory - windows is increasing the size of the virtual
memory paging file ...

can anyone give me an idea of what's happening?

System in Dell Dimension 4500 w/256 megs of memory.
