Virus or problem with windows vista?

Posted: 01-24-2009, 04:34 PM

Just over the past few days, my poor laptop hasnt been very well. I wa
using internet/msn one night and the screen went completely blank excep
for my desktop background, and my clock/stickynotes/calendar thing o
the far right. Not knowing how to fix it i waited a while, then switche
off my laptop. I switched it back on again and thats where the problem
started, just to get on the internet right now its took me little unde
3 hours to get it started up and working, as its so slow and keep
crashing. Im getting the little (not responding) thing a lot, which i
really annoying. It wont open programs for a good long while, usuall
taking a LOT longer than it usually does, when i press cntrl+alt+delet
to get the security options up i get a blank black screen and a littl
window that says 'logon process failed to create security option
dialog'. I originally thought this was a virus so i uninstalled my AV
antivirus and installed the newest one which is 8.0 or something, an
scanned every folder on my pc... and nothing but a few tracking cookies
which left me stumped. Ive got over 40gb spare memory, deleted all file
i dont need, so its not clogged up with crap. I'm not sure if this is
problem with my CPU, overheating or something, which is why its takin
so damned long to process things, whether its a problem with window
vista, or i have a very well hidden virus. Any suggestions?? im tearin
my hair out!

The first thing I'd try is a system restore - and select a date before the
problem started.

Select "System" from the "Control Panel". Then select "System Protection"
and then click on the "System Restore" button.

It will restore your system to a prior point in time without affecting your
data files.

Any programs/updates installed after the restore point will be lost.

It sounds like hardware failure to me. An easy way to test is to boot with a
Linux Live CD - I prefer Knoppix but Ubuntu will do - and see how it
behaves under a different operating system. If it exhibits the same
symptoms, you know it's hardware. Then, since this is a laptop, your next
step is to call the laptop mftr.'s tech support.

If the laptop behaves perfectly under Linux (which I suspect it will not),
then first try booting to Last Known Good Configuration. Get there from the
same menu as Safe Mode.
