Visa and Windows Defender versions

Posted: 12-28-2007, 12:42 PM

I have Vista Ultimate with Windows Defender configured in use.

Using Defender - Help - About .........I can see that Windows Defender
is
version 1505

If I check on the Defender website it shows the latest version as 1593
- I downloaded it but it refused to install with the message that
Defender is included with Vista and it was not needed.

I tried Windows Update - but it reports that my system is up to date

If this is true - why is the current Windows Defender website download
a
later version than the one installed on my computer ?

Windows Defender is built into Vista, in other words, it is automatically
installed when Vista is installed. In the case of Windows XP windows
defender is an add on that the user installs themselves.

The downloaded versions (1593) is for installing on Windows XP. The Vista
version should automatically update itself as and when necessary. My machine
is currently running Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 beta and the Windows
defender version number is 1.1.1600 (a few builds in advance of the version
1593)

I think you will find that when it becomes necessary to 'update' windows
defender then it will be done automatically via Windows Update.
