Vista 64 Bit Network Discovery Automatically Turns Off - Help

Posted: 11-11-2008, 05:52 AM
Just got an HP laptop with Vista 64 bit. My home network is working well
(have 2 XP machines and 2 Vista machines (one 32 bit and one 64 bit)).
However, the new 64 bit laptop has the network discovery feature turn itself
off on occasion. Tells me it has gone from a private to a public network. I
have to reboot the PC. I have done searches and many other folks have had
the same problem, but I have not seen a solution. Any help out there?
Thanks in advance.

Are you connected to an unsecured wireless connection?

No, I am secured in my home wireless network.

Have you changed the SSID from the router default? I've seen this problem
when a neighbour has the same SSID (e.g. linksys or dlink) and is not using
encryption. Make sure you are connected to the router you think you are. If
this is not the problem are there any errors in the event logs when the
network changes from private to public?

The problem mainly occurs after the laptop is brought out of sleep mode. How
do I get to event logs?

This blog has some troubleshooting tips to help diagnose sleep/resume
problems.

http://jvert.spaces.live.com/blog/cn...63E3!373.entry

Sleep/resume problems are almost always caused by a misbehaving driver.
Check that your network card has the latest driver. I would get these from
the manufacturer's site. I would also try the latest driver from the NIC
chipset manufacturer. What is the model of the laptop?

Not to hijack but I too would like to hear about some solutions to this
problem. I have set up a network with a few computers one of which runs
Vista. Just randomly the Vista computer suddenly decides to turn off
Network Discovery. I have to go back in, turn it back on and then need
to go into the diagnose and have it reset the IP address then all is
good again. I've seen many many people with this issue but have not seen
any fixes to this problem. It seems there must be some simple fix to
stop the computer from turning off the network discovery on it's own.
But so far I can't find anything to manage this. Thanks in advance.
