vista and stop 7b error - tens of thousands affected

Posted: 09-10-2007, 02:12 AM
USB drive install
1. with XP SP2 after first reboot the XP screen shows briefly the 7b error
2. Installed Suse Linux 10.2 OK
3. So I bought VISTA Business thinking ................ gawd help us, what
got into me!
4. VISTA install goes worse than XP SP2!!!!
Everything just dies after a couple of minutes in the install screen!!!!

So what's the solution ?
I'm a bit pissed to have paid $500 for software that does not work.
The laptop will not work with the internal drive so I have to use the USB
external one.
This 7b issue has been around for years. Microsoft support babbles on about
Hotfixes etc but it's inaccessible. Reading the forums ....... ha! ha! ha!

PS
( Linux are accused of infringing 3000 Microsoft patents, obviously not for
this problem).

Are you saying that you were unable to install Windows Vista from a
DVD drive
that is connected to a USB port on your computer?

Don't let anger get the better of you. If you were able to install a
version of
Linux, you can certainly install Windows Vista. You may just have to
find
a different way to install it. If the problem is that it can't be
installed from a
DVD drive connected to your computer via USB, then get an internal DVD
drive — they're not too expensive.

If that's not the problem, could you more accurately describe the
problem so that
the nice folks here can help you?

Thank you for the mature response!

Installing LINUX to login and desktop proves the hardware is OK and
everything is stable.

I am installing from an internal DVD/RW drive to an external 2.5" brand new
80Gb Seagate drive.
The drive has just one NTFS partition, Vista stops at the "yellow dots" at
the bottom of the screen,

With XP (any flavor) the problem is "USB device enumeration" - where is
there a solutiuon for this that I can download without hassle ?

Why am I dreadfully pessimistic about a fix ? Because in the past, say last
10 years, the Microsoft software/system problems I have experienced have
NEVER had a solution - from Microsoft, or forums.

I wish I could install XP on the laptop - it's going to be a lot easier to
use.

Re: vista business crippled for USB drive installs ?
Posted: 09-12-2007, 02:02 AM

I have just remembered reading somewhere that some versions of VISTA have
been crippled so that they do not install in USB hard drives/keys. Is VISTA
Business one of these versions ? I'm looking at the disk now and there is
nothing on it saying "will not install on USB drives". So, will give it
another go.

Re WINDOWS 7b error.
I found posts going back to 2005 on this, including USB enumeration bug -
so it's been around a while and it's still a problem that has not been fixed.

- just tried another install from laptop internal DVD drive to new external
USB 80Gb hard drive.

Vista does:
1. loading files appears on screen
2. Green slider appears, moves back and forth, and then freezes
3. 10 mins later - yup still frozen

It's not a matter of being "crippled." No Microsoft operating system
has been designed with the capability of being installed to, and
booting/running from, any external media. That would make it entirely
too easy for people to circumvent copyright and EULA restrictions.
