Vista Beta 2 freezes on install/boot up

Posted: 06-09-2006, 10:30 AM
Hello everyone.. I can see that this has been asked before but I just have to
ask again... when I install vista on my laptop it installs fine... when I
install on my desktop it downloads all the new files for installation, copies
the files to the windows folder as any install... then says that it needs to
reboot and does so... the new vista boot screen comes up just fine then I get
the vista background and a FREEZE everytime... or it will reboot and go back
to the previous operating system! someone PLEASE help! this has happend with
EVERY build of Vista that I have tried to install on my desktop all the way
up to 5384.4. Once again PLEASE HELP!

Windows copies files to the disk, expands them, and restarts a couple times,
install features, installs updates and Completes setup. During the install
routine there can be signs of delay but usually its just a delay and setup
will continue just fine. If setup does become non-responsive, you can do a
cold boot and then boot up back the machine and boot Vista setup into safe
mode to see if Vista will finish setup.

Tip: (If setup becomes non-responsive) Start the computer, when the Windows
Boot Manager is displayed, select Windows Setup press F8 on your keyboard
and setup should continue.

Similar thing for me, but I can log in, get to my desktop, and do things for
about 2 minutes, then the mouse starts to jerk about then it just freezes
altogether. Tried running in safe mode and the same thing happens

I got to "completing upgrade" where it sat for over an hour. Then I tried
the F8 and at least got to a new screen - ""the upgrade was not successful.
Your previous version of Windows is being restored." Using RC2 disk from
Microsoft, updated it, trying to do an upgrade. May try again with a clean
install.

I made it all the way to "completing upgrade" where it sat for over an hour.
Tried reboot & F8 which at least got me to "the upgrade was not successful.
Your previous version of Windows is being restored." Will try again another
day ....

Try this if you are having problems with installing Vista RC2 on a
system where a previous version (beta2) was already installed.

* Use a Windows XP Recovery Console or alternate OS Boot.

* Boot the alternate os/recovery console

* Delete every vista file on the target partition,
{ users, programdata, program files, program files(x86), documents and settings }
[NOTE: If you delete this, they are gone, so make sure you keep what you need :-) ]
[NOTE: Make sure you delete on the VISTA partition and not your XP / Other...]
[NOTE: Files may be "protected" so you need to take ownership of them then
change file permissions, then remove system/hidden/read-only, then delete]
[NOTE: Directory Opus has some problems with deleting a few of the folders]

* Use "fixboot" from the XP REcovery Console (boot the XP Install CD, Press R)
[NOTE: This will un-plug the Vista Boot Manager.. ]
* Delete the "boot" folder on the boot partition.
* Delete the "bootmgr" file in the root of the boot partition.

* Reboot

* Insert VISTA Installation CD

* Install.

* Cross your fingers... :-)

(Thats basically what I did. I should mention that Vista destroyed my XP64 boot
+ installation after I installed Vista... but I managed to fix it...)

Thanks, but all that's a bit over my head. Also, I managed to get it done
with a simpler solution (at least seems simpler) -- after I got rolled back
to Win XP I uninstalled several of the programs that were incompatible
(especially the security suite and antispyware resident software), removed
the login password, then installed Vista as an upgrade. SUCCESS!! Happy
camper here, thanks for the info, tho.
