Vista betas to be released monthly

Microsoft will release updates to the beta of Windows Vista every month until the gold master release to corporate customers in November, the software giant's Australian Windows chief revealed today.

Jeff Putt, Director, Windows Client, Microsoft Australia revealed the plan in a briefing to journalists at Microsoft's headquarters in Sydney today.

"We're on the bug-hunt," he said.

However Putt said the plan depended on the volume and complexity of bugs Microsoft had to fix.

He also refuted media reports over past weeks about Windows' heavy use of the GPU sapping notebook battery life and causing desktop PCs to run hot.

"This is still beta 2 code. [GPU heat and power consumption] also relies on third parties and their graphics drivers - and they are coming along," he said.

"A key goal and intention for us is to not compromise battery life. We'd be reasonably short-sighted to shoot ourselves in the foot that badly just for getting that one element [the Vista 3D GUI]."

Putt reconfirmed that the corporate version would be released in November 2006 and the consumer version "very early" in the first quarter of 2007.

He still refused to provide any pricing for the sixteen different versions of Vista, saying that it would be revealed "in due course".



Please keep in mind, these updates maybe only for the Beta Testers until RC1 comes out for the general public use.

It is not clear whether he is referring to the Customer Preview beta program or the TechBeta program which has been receiving monthly drops for some time. Even in the TechBeta program, those who opted to receive dvd's by mail only get the milestone releases (Beta 1, Beta 2, and RC1).

AFAIUI(as far as I understand it) that only pertains to the Technical Beta
group(those who were testing Longhorn/Vista before Beta2/Consumer Technology
Preview. I do not think we normal folks will be getting the updates...

Zapper, there is no Consumer Tech Preview. It is a Customer Tech Preview.
The specific customers are outlined on GetReady. They are definitely not
Consumers.

Semantics...I buy the product, thus I am a consumer...or a
prosumer....whatever you want to call me...I am not in the Technical Beta,
as such, I am not a Beta Tester..I just happen to be using the only product
legally available to me..which happens to be called Beta2
Consumer/Customer..same thing!!!!

No it isn't. The text from GetReady is:
