Vista boot manager won't recognise XP

Posted: 10-23-2006, 10:01 AM
Hi there,

I've just installed Vista sucessfully onto my machine, and am planning on
running dual boot with XP (which exists on a separate partition). Only
problem is that Vista doesn't realise XP is installed, and I know that XP's
boot magr isn't forwards compatible
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919529/en-us#top.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Cheers,

Toby R, New Zealand.

Install VistaBootPro http://www.vistabootpro.org/ and add a legacy os. If
you have a problem booting after doing that, you should copy the ntldr
ntdetect.com and boot.ini files onto the drive with Vista boot file on it.
You should then make sure that the boot.ini points to the proper
HDD/Partition for XP

Hi there,

I had the same problem when I installed the 64-bit Vista version, as well as
the 32-bit XP pro version. It didn't like the two different clients.

I simply fixed this by changing Vista to the 32-bit client.

Duh, I just figured it out.

Even though my drive on the third SATA channel had boot priority in BIOS,
Vista had put all the boot records on the primary ide drive.
Silly me.

Thanks for the help guys, i've taken your advise and it seems to be working.

Cheers
