Default Vista Business & XP Networking question

I after working long finally managed to network my vista laptop and xp
desktop. It worked normally untill a restart of my laptop. Though i can
access the laptop from my xp desktop seamlessly through 'my network places'.

The only issue that i have is that i cannot see the xp desktop when i go to
'Network' from my laptops vista start menu.

But i can easly browse my xp desktop from vista if i use '\\xp-desktopname'
My question is how do i get the xp-desktop icon to appear when i go to
'Netowrk' from vista start menu.

I also noticed that when i view the full map in network and sharing center,
i can view my xp-desktop icon but cannot click it to open/browse files..

I am sure there will be some workaround to fix this issue.. by the way I
have LLD update installed on XP desktop.

If you can browse the XP but not see it from the Network, it could be the computer browser issue. Any error in the event viewer?

There are quite a few repeating errors..

The one relating to browser is

8032: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many
times on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{C93E04AC-7D13-4633-B6CD-DFD94718A11C}. The backup
browser is stopping.

The others..

5007: The target file for the Windows Feedback Platform (a DLL file
containing the list of problems on this computer that require additional data
collection for diagnosis) could not be parsed. The error code was 8014FFF9.

10010:The server {0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} did not register
with DCOM within the required timeout.

1003: Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from
the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 001B7763CC61. The
following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user.. Your computer will continue to try
and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Can you draw me some suggestions from this?

Thanks in advance

I would check the DNS settings first. Also you may want to use browstat.exe to check the master browser. This may help.

Hello Robert,

Thanks for those links regarding master browser.

I think now i have traced the issue. I have noticed that when my xp desktop
becomes the master browser, i cannot view the xp desktop icon in my vista
laptop network, but like i have said earlier, can browse using \\pcname.

Also, i see that i cannot open the link "my workgroup computers" from xp. It
says that 'Workgroup not accessible..... list of servers not available.'

Instead, when my vista laptop becomes the master browser, it can display the
xp desktop icon in the network.

The logical workaround for it was to make my vista laptop the default master
browser.

I went to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser\Parameters

added a string IsDomainMaster=Yes on vista laptop and IsDomainMaster=No on
xp desktop.

This seems to have fixed the issue for now. Though i wonder if there is any
other proper workaround for this issue.

Regards
