Default Vista cannot see XP

The Vista PC on my metwork shows other Vista PCs on the LAN, but does not
show the XP's. The XP's do show in the network map (I do have the LTTD
patch installed on the XPs), and I can see the shared folders on the XPs *IF*
I enter the address directly (\\xpcomputer) in Vista. But "Network"
displays only the Vista PCs. Microsoft Tech support was not of much help.

Anyone know reason/solution?

Hi Venu. You should make sure the machines are all in the same workgroup.

Thanks,

That may not be the problem. Mine, which is similar, shows me only Vista if
wireless, but all my PCs if I'm wired. Barb Bowman mentioned I need to set a
switch somewhere from Public to Private and then I'll see the other boxes.
Haven't tried this yet but might get to it tonight...

yes, change from public to private, turn discovery on and file and
print sharing on if needed.

Gloria,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

All my PCs are in the same workgroup; I have my LAN set to 'private' and
all file/printer sharing is turned on.

Still Vista PCs cannot see XP PCs (I have 2 Vista, 2 XP). The XP PCs can
see the Vista PCs.

Also, from Vista, I can enter the specific computer name (\\xp-pc-name) and
successfully get access to shared folders. Just can't see them in 'Network'.

I also cannot access my NAS device from Vista (but that is another story).

Went up three levels of support at Microsoft and didn't get anywhere.

Due to this and another issue with a NAS device that Vista cannot see, I
have gone back to XP (Thank god I did a dual boot installation rather than
upgrade).

Maybe Vista Service Pack 1, whenever it comes out, will fix this...
Microsoft PC not talking to Microsoft PC is not good....
