Vista CD burning tools "missing" from explorer.

Posted: 07-11-2007, 11:08 AM
Somehow, explorer has "lost" the menu options and tasks for CD burning. This
used to work, but now has disappeared - either as a result of upgrading drive
firmware, or uninstalling an old version of Nero.

I've found a KB article describing how to fix this in XP..

....but it doesn't apply to Vista - the registry entries are all subtly
different.

Anybody have a suggestion?

RoddyP,

Here's one that applies to Vista:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

This problem has been around for some time.

RoddyP,

In case the burner program that you are using is causing a problem for you,
here are links to three burners that people who have used them say work well
with
Vista:

http://www.imgburn.com/

http://www.deepburner.com/

http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/hom...ssion_langid=2

I obtained those references from another forum. I've not used any of them.
Each one has a free version and a more fully featured pay version. Just for
your information and consideration.

Thanks. I tried that, but it hasn't worked. I see the CDROM in explorer and
can read from it fine: it's just explorer's built-in burner that doesn't seem
to think there's a suitable device. Devcon looks mostly OK

C:\devcon\i386>devcon stack gencdrom
SCSI\CDROM&VEN_LITE-ON&PROD_DVDRW_SHM-165P6S&REV_MS0R\5&14D128B3&0&000000
Name: LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165P6S SCSI CdRom Device
Setup Class: {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} CDROM
Controlling service:
cdrom

Thanks for the links - Some of those look pretty good. The burner software
I've been trying to use is vista itself, so it should be compatible :-(

RoddyP,

We've seen reports on this forum that some versions of Nero disable the burn
capability of the CD/DVD-ROM drive. I mention this because you removed a
version of Nero, so that's a likely suspect for the source of your problem.
Other people have fixed that problem by removing the upper and lower filters
in registry, but apparently that move didn't work for you.

Be aware that other software burners have also caused this behavior,
including iPod related burners. If your CD/DVD-ROM burn function is
disabled, I doubt that trying to use another software burner will fix the
problem, but you can try it to see what happens. Have you tried uninstalling
the drive in its Properties in Device Manager and rebooting to see whether
that does anything? Post back on what you determine.

Thanks for your help - I have a fix:

I'd tried any number of things, physically uninstalling/reinstalling the
drive, reflashing the drive from a Sony one to a LiteOn one, with no effect.

Eventually I realised that my Asus P5B uses a JMicron controller, which was
making the drive appear as SCSI rather than ATA. I updated the JMicron driver
to the latest one from the ASUS website, and everything came good. Bizarre in
the extreme...

I've been told that if one installs the INCD 5 portion of the Nero Suite it
disabled Vista's burning software. I wouldn't miss it as it's like watching
paint dry. Nero Express is far faster at burning!

RoddyP,

Thanks for posting that. We all, including those that only lurk and read,
benefit from knowing that bit of information.

Thank you Roddy!

I wondered about the SCSI thing myself, but didn't managed to go that extra
bit and find the drivers. the Foxconn website is not the most helpful but I
eventually found it, packaged as a RAR within a ZIP. Had to download a copy
of WinRAR to finally extract it but now it's looking good. Thanks again.
