Vista CTP 5308 install error (image selection wizard)

Posted: 04-25-2006, 01:18 AM
I am trying to install Windows Vista CTP Build 5308. I think I had burn
problems in creating the ISO DVD but the one I have now passes the CRC test
in the drive that is used to boot from. I have made it through the
installation with possibly bad disks further than I am getting with this one
though.

Question 1: is the Cyclical Redundancy Check sufficient to conclude that the
disk is burned properly?

My hard drive is partitioned with 15GB on C: and 100GB on D:. I have
Windows XP on the D: drive and that's the OS that I really need to use. I
used to have the C: drive formatted as FAT32 so I had to reformat it. Of
course I lost the ability to boot from the D: drive, the one I really need.
But I installed XP on the C: drive, manipulated the boot.ini file and I can
boot the D: drive again. Whew! At least I know I can get to my real system
if I never get the Vista OS to install.

Question 2: is there any reason that I cannot have a dual-boot system with
Vista on C: and XP on D:?

When I attempt to install Vista now, I get the error message: "An internal
Setup error occurred while displaying the image selection wizard" shortly
after the entry of the Product Key. I have gotten further with earlier
attempts but I am consistently getting stopped at this point now.

Question 3: any idea why I may be getting this error?

Thanks, Dick

****** Not necessarily, it could be the quality media, and your burn speed.
I personally use TDK or Verbatim, I also burn at a very low speed, 2x, also
make sure your Burning software finalizes the the Disk.

My hard drive is partitioned with 15GB on C: and 100GB on D:. I have
Windows XP on the D: drive and that's the OS that I really need to use. I

****** I don't know, but I wouldn't install Vista on C: anyway, someone here
reported a similar issue, I would just install Vista on a logical NTFS
drive. What you could try though, is format back the C: Drive as NTFS. Why
did you make it FAT 32 in the first place anyway?

When I attempt to install Vista now, I get the error message: "An internal
Setup error occurred while displaying the image selection wizard" shortly
after the entry of the Product Key. I have gotten further with earlier
attempts but I am consistently getting stopped at this point now.

Question 3: any idea why I may be getting this error?

I will repeat the first answer:
****** It could be the quality media, and your burn speed. I personally use

Sounds confusing - if you are not doing so - install Vista from within XP -
select custom install and select drive on which you want to install Vista. I
dual boot with XP and have installed Vista three times as above.

Agree, install XP on C: launch Setup and select an available partition.

I attempted to install Build 5365 in Virtual PC, non server edition.
After entering the product key, I received a message stating that setup
could not find the image file!

Any thoughts.

Your best bets are Virtual Server 2005 R2 - there's a free download for it
and it runs far better than Virtual PC.
However, there's a guide for VPC if you want to check it out:

Virtual Server 2005 R2
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28331 - "Get the free download" at
the top )

Virtual PC and Vista requires a minimum of 300 MBs of RAM, 512 or more
recommended. Also, you could try installing from network resource, instead
of your local drive.

Thanks for the replies.

RAM and space are not an issue. I thnk it is the build with Virtual PC. I
will try the server edition.

I wonder if anyone has used the non server edition with this last build.

Strange that my error message would be "Setup can not find the image file,"
since it found it to begin the install. Only after I enter the product key
and it is accepted does it fail?

I had that error also, but only installing to VMware same build of windows,
using vm's longhorn configurtion, installed to C: boot menu shows XP Pro and
Vista but i can not read XP files at all, and can no longer boot XP.

Anyone know how to uninstall Vista and undo its changes?
