Default Vista doesn't recognize my internet connection

Hello,

I have a new Vista computer on our corporate network that connects to
the internet via a gateway system and proxy server. I have setup the
computer just like we usually do with XP systems to communicate with
the internet over our internal LAN (setting the IP address, gateway,
name servers, and proxy settings).

This vista system communicates with the internet as expected. The
problem is that Vista under the "Network and Sharing Center" has a red
"X" between the network and Internet and it says the access in for
"local only". I have some software that wants to register via the
internet and cannot because Vista says it is not connected even when
it is. How can I make Vista recognize that it has internet access so
these programs can finish their registration?

Details: The vista system has a fixed IP on our LAN and all parameters
were entered by had (we have no DHCP services internally).

Thanks,

Doug

Robert,

Thank you for the suggestion. Currently I have my network type set to
workgroup as we always have. Will changing this setting cause my
system to not be able to connect to the other local systems? I have a
couple linux systems that are used as file and wins server.

Doug
