Vista General News Group - Windows Mail

Posted: 08-23-2007, 05:42 AM
The General News Group is messed up here. Windows Mail is the
reader. I Deleted the Messages - and Clicked Reset. Now it
will download the next 300 however if I exit Windows Mail
when I come back there are NO messages. If I wait a while
a few messages show up however if I read some and exit
and comeback NONE are marked read. Have repeated
this sequence several times.

In O/E I would have deleted the .DBX files however I don't
know the Windows Mail Filenames and locations even if
this is possible. None of the other News Groups have any
problems just microsost.public.windows.vista.general.
Any ideas?

It is best to uncheck the default option to get only
300 headers at a time. With that option, Windows Mail
seems to lose track of which headers still need to be
downloaded.

I uninstalled Avast and unchecked the 300. It downloaded
all the messages. When I ran Catchup and left and went
back to this group it is empty! No problem with any of the
other groups.

I just went back and there were now 3 new messages in the
folder. I read ONE and left and came back and there were
only two messages, the read one was gone. Bizarre..... I
still think I need to somehow delete the entire file like the
old OE .dbx files if that is possible. I did Unsubscribe,
deleted and reset the group to no avail,,,, this is bizarre.

I deleted the messages and then unsubscribed to ALL the MS
newsgroups and re-subscribed and that seemed to clear up
my problem. Interesting that unsubscribing to just the messed
up group would not clear the problem.

By any chance is your 'current view' for that news server
configured to "Hide read messages"? That would account for
the 'read' ones to disappear.

The only other possibility is that you are running a non-
compatible antivirus program. Windows Mail is not compatible
with most McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will
need to be uninstalled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download and
install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If this does not solve all of your WM problems, I recommend that
you upgrade to Windows Live Mail. It will automatically import
your WM accounts, settings, and emails.

No I did not have that checked, remember only the General
Group was affected. This one and the other Vista groups
I subscribe to had no problems. I uninstalled Avast and have
NO anti-virus running at the present time.

As I said in previous message closing ALL of the MS News
Groups and rejoining all seems to have worked. If it
stays straight for a couple of days I will re-install Avast
since I do not think it had anything to do with this issue.

Thanks for your help.
