Vista home premium to Vista Ultimate (upgrade) failure

Posted: 10-28-2007, 09:11 PM
I have a Vista Home Premium machine used as media center box connected to a
CRT TV. I bought the Vista Ultimate Upgrade DVD just to be able to get remote
access to the machine as the screen gives serious eyestrain when performing
admin tasks.

The upgrade insists on being run from within VIsta (fine), but always fails,
reboot and undoes the upgrade. The failure arises at the end of the
installation and says something non-descript along the lines of:

Failed to upgrade one or more components. Windows will reboot and undo the
upgrade.

I've looked in the event log and not found anything that provides any more
insight into the problem. [ It may be there, but the screen gives me serious
eyestrain ...].

Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Thanks

Download and run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...deadvisor.mspx

Uninstall your antivirus program.

Turn-off all peripheral hardware devices except for
your monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Hi,

Did you disable your antivirus software before beginning?

I've just tried disabling the A/V software and made sure it's definitely not
running. That could well be part of the problem, but another attempt at
upgrade did not succeed for the same reason. I'm about to try disabling all
the devices on the system :- there are two that upgrade advisor doesn't have
any information about (ATI X1200 series GPU and Realteak HD audio)...

This process is rather painful since it takes 60-90 minutes before the
upgrade fails. it appears to be at the end of the process.

If anybody has any input to the upgrade advisor mentioning 'DISABLE A/V' in
the tasks proposed by the upgrade advisor sounds like a good thing to do.

Thanks

I've just tried disabling as many supplemental devices as possible and
uninstalled the graphics driver. Same result.

If anybody else has any ideas, they would be warmly appreciated. [As an MS
stockholder I am seriously underwhelmed by Vista. It's barely beta quality
despite all the advertised improvements and hoopla. I've just shelled out
$150 for something that does not work despite the wording on the
box...grrrr...]

Does the setup error log file say anything interesting? It's at
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
Make sure you're set to see hidden & system files.

setuperr.log contains just three lines:

processed yet, aborting startup processing. Startup processing will be
attempted again. hr: 0x80004004

setupact.log has a few more lines, but nothing that is obviously human
comprehendable:

Hi,

Uninstall the video driver package that is currently running and revert to a
standard VGA set for the upgrade.

RE: Vista home premium to Vista Ultimate (upgrade) failure

The system managed to upgrade yesterday evening. The steps involved were:

1. unplug network connection.
2. uninstall A/V software, disable firewall, windows defender.
3. turn off Windows update.
4. uninstall any third-party services found in services.msc (mobile phone
service, quicktime, etc).
5. unplug all peripherals except keyboard and mouse. Find a USB or PS2
keyboard+mouse if the system has wireless peripherals.
6. disable any additional PCI cards using devmgmt.msc and uninstall graphics
driver.
7. Place upgrade DVD in drive, cross fingers, and perform upgrade.
8. Re-enable security settings (Firewall, A/V, defender) before reconnecting
network connection.
9. Plug in all the peripherals removed and re-install the graphics driver.

The system recovered fine after the installation. The only minor problem was
Vista Media Center losing it's TV settings (it remember recording schedule).

Thanks.
ED
