Vista Installation Issue at Gathering Files Stage

Posted: 11-27-2006, 11:01 PM
I've been reading a number of threads that relate to this issue but none have
helped so far. Basically I'm trying to install Vista Ultimate from an ISO
download via MSDN which I burnt to a DVD (I've tried burning the DVD at
various speeds as per a thread I read). Anyway, the install gets as far as
the gathering files stage (approx 32%) and then a message appears saying
Windows has encounted an error. Before running the upgrade I disabled my AV
and firewall as per another thread I read. During the installation stage a
number of things are raised as issues that may cause a problem after the
installation of Vista, but nothing that needs immediate action. The list of
things raised as potential issues after the upgrade are:

o Universal Serial Bus controllers: Sony Ericsson W810 Driver
o Ports (COM & LPT): Sony Ericsson W810 USB WMC OBEX Interface (COM8)
o Ports (COM & LPT): Sony Ericsson W810 USB WMC Device Management (COM9)
o HP ImageZone
o Sygate Personal Firewall Pro
o Sony Ericsson PC Suite 1.7.10
o nVidia Display drivers/nView Desktop Manager (NVIDIA Drivers)

I've run the Upgrade Advisor and the only things to note are:

Programs
Sygate Personal Firewall - Program may not work

Devices
ATK0110 ACPI Utility - Download latest driver
Creative Audigy Audio Processor - Download latest driver
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller - No compatibility data available
Maxtor OneTouch - No compatibility data available
Creative Game Port - No compatibility data available
UIM Advanced Encryption Standard Driver - No compatibility data available
UIM Encrypted Disk Image Plugin - No compatibility data available
UIM Standard CryptoPlugin Driver - No compatibility data available
PSC2350 series (DOT4) - No compatibility data available
PSC3250 series (DOT4PRT) - No compatibility data available
PSC3250 series (DOT4PRINT) - No compatibility data available

Apart from that my system configuration meets the requirements for Vista.

Does anyone have any suggestions??

You will get some of the items on your compat report via Microsoft Update
automatically right after installation. The ATK0110 ACPI utility always is
among the first for me (Vista x64).

I don't see listed what hard drive controller is on your system. The point
of failure is right about the first reboot so I strongly suspect that you
may need to add the driver before starting installation.

Colin - Thanks for your reply.

The hard drive wasn't listed on any of the compatibility reports as needing
attention so I assumed the existing drivers would be ok. Are you saying that
I need to update the drivers for the hard drive controller?

Also, the software that was listed as needing attention after the upgrade
i.e. Sygate Personal Firewall, HP ImageZone etc, would there be any value in
uninstalling these first before carrying out the upgrade?

Any software flagged as incompatible/problematic, especially
antivirus/firewall, is best uninstalled before attempting the upgrade.
Check with the software companies for Vista compatibility.

Jane - Thanks for your reply.

I'll uninstall my anti-virus and firewall software and give it another go. I
was just a bit hesitant in doing this in case the upgrade still didn't work
and it meant by PC being left wide open to attacks.

Do check with the supplier before you re-install them as well (as Jane
suggested), many apps like a/v and firewalls just won't run on Vista until
the manufacturers bring out upgrades. The Vista firewall is fine and the
free version of AVG a/v is Vista ready:

http://grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-...g/us/tpl/tpl01

it seems to have a good reputation.

No, not update the drivers, make sure that you supply one with the Load
Drivers prompt if needed. If you are using SATA then make sure your mobo's
firmware supplies it (some mobos do and some don't). If not, you need to
provide it.

I simply don't know if you need to or not, but the point at which you have
the issue is familiar to me as a point where control passes from XP to the
Vista pre-installation environment (the reboot) and that is the first point
at which a missing driver would matter. From that point on what is in XP no
longer helps.

Colin - can you elaborate on what you mean. Here are details of my mobo:

Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8N-E 2.XX
Serial Number: 123456789000
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS A8N-E ACPI BIOS Revision 1005 06/08/2005

And here are details of my hard drives:

Maxtor DiamondMax10 6L250S0 [Hard drive] (250.99 GB) -- drive 0
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y250M0 [Hard drive] (250.99 GB) -- drive 1

I'm not sure what you mean by making sure that I supply drivers with the
Load Drivers prompt??

I have a system with an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe board and the SATA controller
drivers are in firmware so I suspect that your board already supports SATA
controllers in firmware as well, but you should check. You can find out
online (Asus).

You may recall that in earlier editions of Windows you had to hit F6 to load
drivers right after you booted with the Windows cd during the first stage of
Windows installation. With Vista you do the same thing by clicking the Load
Drivers icon on the Setup screen just below the window where you select the
target drive. As I said, you probably don't need to that. If your drives
are IDE you for sure don't need to do anything.

Just so you know, the BIOS revision on your board is very outdated.
ASUS has v1013 available and you need 1008 or higher (if I recall
correctly) to run SATA properly with recent drivers in XP and Vista.

I have the same board and Vista installs with RAID drivers as well as
SATA.

Also, you really should do a clean install, not an upgrade.
