Vista and Lap Tops

a corrupted installation.

Sounds like inadequate hardware resources, or too many processes running
simultaneously.... How much RAM do you have? With a laptop, where the
integrated video adapter will always suck up a significant proption of
system RAM, it's necessary to have RAM far in excess of the recommended
minimums. You need to have at least 1 GB of RAM, and you really should have
more, given that you've mentioned 3D animation below.

"Counter-intuitive" or just not what you're used to?
"Counter-intuitive" means that someone who's never used and grown accustomed
earlier versions of Windows would have trouble performing routine tasks. Is
that truly the case? I think not. The rest of your post indicates that
this can't actually be the case, and that you fall into the latter category:
you're expecting Vista to look like an earlier version. Why? It's a new
OS; what would be the point of having it look the same as its predecessors?
Anyway, if you don't like the interface, simply switch to the Windows
Classic theme. That should make you feel right at home.

What "extra junk," specifically? Items the computer manufacturer put
there, or default Windows items? If the former, complain to the OEM;
Microsoft has no control over it. If the latter, simply customise the Start
Menu to your taste; it's not as if it were carved in stone.

The UAC is a security feature that's been the common default on other
operating systems (Linux, Unix, etc) for years. For years, Microsoft has
been "damned" for not paying enough attention to basic security; now, when
they finally start moving in the right direction, they're being "damned"
again. Ironic, isn't it? However, if you don't like UAC -- and I'll
concede that it's certainly annoying during the set up and "burn-in" period
of using a new computer -- just turn it off. At least Vista is safer out-of
the-box than any of it's predecessors, which was the intent.

Contact the makers of those applications to obtain Vista-compatibile
versions; this isn't a Windows issue.

Then you really need to contact the laptop's manufacturer and get some
warranty support. If the laptop's as unstable as you say, then you've
either a serious hardware problem, or there is something fundamentally wrong
with the OEM installation.

Nothing you've said supports such an assertion. In fact, your post
makes it clear that you have had hardware problems from the beginning, have
encountered a steeper-than-expected learning curve, and incompatible
software applications. Nothing you've mentioned points to any inherent
flaws in the OS, at all. (This isn't to say that Vista's by any means
perfect, but it's not at all likely to be the source of the problems you've
mentioned.)

Good luck with those learning curve and application compatibility
issues.

We seen hundreds of posts just like yours every time a new operating
system hits the field. Invariably, nearly everyone blames the new operating
system. Most of the problems fall into three categories: disappointed
expectations, and hardware defects or incompatibilities, and 3rd party
software inadequacies and incompatibilities. You post indicates that you're
experiencing all three issues. This is unfortunate, and very frustrating
for you, but it really doesn't pertain directly to flaws inherent to the new
OS.
