Default Vista PC can access shared folders but can't connect to Local LAN Servers

Hello guys. I have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative
We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp,
couple Vista

The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for
small upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server fo
various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista

I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop.
have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I ca
actually "see" the XP computer. I can even open up and download share
files from it

Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other serve
in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This compute
just refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'
freaking out that some of the vista computers won't work. Please hel
ASAP Thank you!!

OK, I'm just a bit confused about your problem.
" On the laptop, I can actually "see" the XP computer. I can even open up and
download shared files from it!"
then
"I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the
XP or others...even the other Vista)."

Could you maybe re type that slower? I'm betting that you have a couple typos,
and that's preventing me from understanding what you're saying (maybe the heat
is a problem too).

Or, you could maybe diagnose the problem, using logs from "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from the
server, the laptop, and one computer that has no problem, so we can diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (Download browstat, and run all programs in Vista from a command
window started as admin.):

OK. I'm sorry if I sounded like a spaz, haha. My problem is this.
From the Network Sharing area of Vista, I can click on the network and
"see" all of the different computers. I can then click on them to
access their shared files.

The second quote was strictly dealing with LAN game servers. When I
make a server with any other computer in the LAN, I cannot access it
through this one Vista Laptop.

So I can't see game servers or even manually force a "connect to IP" to
them, but I can browse through the various computers in Windows Vista.

*Note: This problem goes away when using wireless. I can then access
game servers correctly, but I'd still like to find out why I can't do
this using a hard connection. Thanks.

hi nerdcorerocks,

on your Vista pcs check to see wheter nework Discovery is workin
properly. Enable and Disable it. also what is the error message tha
your getting when you try to connect to the other xp pcs. if you
getting a Access Denied you need to go to control panel switch to clasi
mode go to user accounts. on your left side you should see manag
network passwords. add your Xp servers Username and password. Also mak
sure your Vista machines and Xp machines are in the same workgroup
because Vista is defulty joint to WORKGROUP.

Hope this helps.

Cheers !

Hi nerdcorerocks,

then u need to check wheter your firewall is blocking any port that i
connecting to your game server Since Vista is also a outbound firewal
it may be blocking you from connecting to the server allow the port fro
your firewall to the server. go to start in the search bar typ
advfirewall and create a new outbound access rule.

Hope this helps

OK, let's see what diagnostics show. See my post above, and be thorough,
please. 3 computers x 4 log files each - don't scrimp.

Hi guys. I just did a test. It actually can see "some" game server
but not all of them (can't see Farcry, Battlefield 2, but can see Hal
Life 2). I guess I'm content enough, cause it might not be the laptop'
fault. Thanks for your help though
