Vista randomly resets router

Here's the setup:

Vista Home Premium PC <--- Ethernet cable ---> Belkin 54g router < ---
Internet

Almost immediately after starting Windows Vista, the router will turn off
all the lights, then flash the PWR + SYN + DATA + WLAN leds (as part of the
boot routine), followed by the LAN leds. Then it proceeds to reconnect to
the internet.

Anywhere between 2 and 15 minutes later, the router will reset again and so
on.

This behaviour is not seen while running XP.

Any ideas why the router (F5D7630v4) is resetting itself but only when
running Vista?

do you have the latest fimware Belkin router? anything in the router
log or windows event logs?

have you run the tests at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/usi...d/default.mspx ?

can you do so and paste the results in as a reply?

The router is an F5D7630v4, and is up to date on firmware.

I'll run said tests, check the logs and let you know.

I'm not at that machine at present, so I'll have to do it later.

OK,
I ran the IGD tests. All of them passed. No problems.

The router is not on the HCL for windows Vista though.

The router did not reset during the tests, however immediately after the
tests finished, the router reset, and took the rest of the network with it.

I've just spent about half an hour bringing all the network devices back up
in the right order so that they are recognised by each other.

If my router passes the IGD tests, and works fine with XP, Linux anything
else, heck even 98, but hook up vista, wait max 10 mins and it resets.

Customer = Dissatisfied.

There isn't a lot more I can suggest. This is apparently a UK
version only router and there's nothing that I can find on Belkin's
support site about it. The only thing I can suggest is to reset the
thing to factory defaults (painful if there is no way to first save
your settings to a file and the upload them later which is what I
was looking for on the Belkin site but I couldn't find any docs).

What else is on your network? Can you provide a list of all devices?

I can't really bear the thought or MORE factory resets (I only did about 10
in a row last week to repair the damned thing after Belkin trashed my
config!).

The attached devices are as follows:
Wireless
- 2 x Windows XP Home desktops

Wired
- 1 x VISTA Home Premium
- 1 x 24 port LAN switch
- 1 x Belkin F5D7632v4 ADSL Modem Router
- - 1 x XP MCE desktop
- - 1 x 5 port LAN switch
- - - Linux (Ubuntu 7.04) Web/Mail/Sharing Server

That's a rough view of the network.

In addition, there's a Palm and a Windows Mobile handheld that roams around
between the two APs.

The VISTA PC does have XP on it as a primary OS, (as I develop my own
software) but I need to test a web based shell extension in Vista, and it's
not easy without a connection!

what happens if you disable IPv6 on the Vista machine and give it a
static private IP and static DNS settings?

i'm curious - what do you run off that 24 port switch?

It's already static IP, and I THINK IPv6 is off (not sure though).

The 24 port switch is currently idle. Somebody was throwing it out and I
salvaged it!

IPv6 has been disabled, as has LLTD with no effect.

In fact all that's left is:
Client for MS Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Print Sharing
TCP/IPv4

Although I think I've just found the culprit:

Master browser for the domain.

Literally just now, the router reset, and its boot sequence (I have timed)
is 12 seconds.

Oddly, there's just 13 seconds between the events, and ooh, surprise it
matches up with the router boot time.

I can only conclude that there is an issue with the vista master browser
that kills off some router models.

I welcome other suggestions, but I do not think this is a router issue.
