What does not happen when you insert the XP disk, it does not boot from it?
Ensure that your BIOS is set to boot from your DVD optical drive. This is
usually accessed by pressing the F1 or F12 key on your keyboard continuously
until it appears.

If that does not work, you should be able to boot from your Vista DVD, enter
setup and Next > Repair your computer > Next (make sure the drive you want
to format is selected) > click the Command Prompt link > type Format X: >
enter

X: representing the name of the drive on which Vista is installed. After
this is complete, type Exit > Enter > Restart the PC.

Boot from the XP CD again and attempt reinstallation.
