Vista and VPN (Cisco Pix)

Posted: 09-05-2006, 01:22 PM
Hello

I have a question. I have Windows Vista install on a laptop and Desktop
(RC1) and when i want to setup a VPN connection with the normal Windows VPN
wizard. The connection wizard work fine but when I want to connect to a Cisco
Pix firewall (501, 506, 515) I receive a error “Error 732 : Your computer and
the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocols“. I check the
connection with a Windows XP client and it looks the same. and in XP its
working fine. (so I’m using the VPN without a Cisco Client). The same problem
was in the Bata2 and the Pre-RC1. What is different between XP and Vista
(with out this option many customers can’t use the normal VPN anymore)

Thanks

I have the same problem with RC1. I hate that you can not get any
additional information beyond that...

Hey Peter,

I was able to get mine working finally. The problem appears to lie in the
authentication methods used. I have several configurations that work, but
you need to provide more information to isolate your problem. Here are two
scenario's that I have encountered and found solutions for.

1. Using the Cisco Client (IPSec)
- Try upgrading to the latest Cisco VPN Client for Vista.

2. Using the Windows Client (PPTP)
- When used with Cisco Devices, the PIX products typically support PAP,
CHAP and MSCHAP v1. Vista uses MSCHAP v2 by default. You can go to the
properties of the connection and force it to use PAP and that seems to work.
(It's almost completely insecure, but at least it works. There appears to
be something wrong with CHAP and Vista has no support for MSCHAP v1. Try
and use PAP and see if it works. The password will be sent in clear text,
which is unfortunate, but at least it will work...
