Vista/XP Networking

Posted: 09-20-2006, 11:45 AM
I have a wired LAN. From the Vista machines I can see all the XP machines.
But no shared resources from the Vista machines show up on the XP machines.
Is there something I need to do in Vista or on the XP machines?

TIA

I had a similar problem. I was able to see the vista shares on my xp machine
but not able to access them. I fixed that problem by adding the "everyone"
group to the security list on the vista share and giving it full access.

You might have file sharing turned off in the network and sharing center.

Hi,

You need to turn the Network on in order to view the network devices on
Vista. You should still be able to view the Vista shares from XP. Did you try
to acces the Vista pc by its ip directly - Goto Start - Run and type the ip
e.g. \\192.168.0.10 and see if you can access it. Or give the share name
after ip e.g. \\192.168.0.10\Share.

abc.

You also need to make it a private network in "networking".

I had the same problem. I could see the XP machine but the XP machine could
not see the Vista computer. I went to the network setup on the XP machine
and had it to show me the computers on the network. When I doulble clicked
the Vista computer's icon it asked for the user name & password. I filled
in the blanks, checked the "remember password" blank and that solved the
problem. On the XP machine the procedure was: Start, Control Panel, Network
Connections, My Network Places, View Workgroup Computers, double click Vista
Comuter's Icon, Provide Username and Password and check remember.

i had a similar problem, my problem was that Vista defaults the network name
to workgroup i believe and my XP machine was set to "home" so if you go to
the
network and sharing center and make sure your network names are the same on
both machines....

Vista/XP Networking

Hi. I am having a problem connecting Vista with an XP network. The vista
machine is not seeing any of the XP machines but can ping the IP of the xp
machines. The xp machines can see the vista machine but cannot access it or
ping the ip.

They are both on the same subnet mask and workgroup.

If anyone has a solution could you please let me know.

Thanks

To setup a Vista server, you have to
* Set the Network Location Type to "Private". This implies that your
computers are secure, behind a perimeter firewall or a NAT router, and opens the
personal firewall for file sharing.
* Check / set "Password protected sharing" (PPS). Disabling PPS is the
equivalent of enabling Simple File Sharing, in Windows XP.
* Setup shared folders and printers. If you enabled PPS, you should setup
access for individual users. If you disabled PPS, you setup access for "Guest"
or "Everyone".

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx

Other than the setup wizards, Vista will be basically like XP. You'll still have
issues with Windows Networking, if not properly set.
* Put all computers in the same workgroup.
* Make sure that NetBT is Enabled consistently.
* Make sure that all personal firewalls are properly setup.
* Make sure that name resolution is consistently setup.

Vista/XP Networking

I have a new PC running Vista Home Premium & a laptop with XP Home. I am
trying to set up a wireless network between the two. My problem is that the
PC can see and access the files on the laptop and the laptop sees the files
on the PC. However, despite allowing full access to the 2 hard drives on the
PC which are not password protected, I get the message "access denied" when
clicking on either from the laptop. Both computers are using the same
network name and the Norton firewall seems to be configured ok on both. Also
I can't access the printer connected to the PC which I could on my old PC
running XP. I have no problems accessing the Internet through the
router/modem on the laptop.
