VMWare Network Adapters

Posted: 02-22-2007, 11:14 PM
Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with my Network Locations which seems to be
related to the two VMWare Virtual Adapters that I have installed (for VMWare
WS v6).
Both adapters are listed in the Network and Sharing Center as 'Unidentified
network (public), which is fine as my physical NIC is setup as a home Private
Network.
The problem is that Network Discovery is shown as Turned Off, so I can't see
the machine in the browse list on other machines in the same workgroup, I
also can't rdp to it.
After looking at the firewall rules, I can see why this is, RDP, NB & SMB
are disabled for Public networks, fine; that's how I want it, BUT my physical
NIC is a private network for which the rules are enabled. It looks like
Vista is using the 'unidentified network (public)' to determine what firewall
rules should apply to the Private Network (physical NIC)
I have confirmed this, to an extent, by enabling Discovery (NB, SMB) on the
VMWare Adapters network location (Unidentified Network), and hey presto
everything works.
What I don’t understand is why Vista is using my VMWare Adapters as priority
for the FW rules.
Does anyone know if I can change this behaviour? I have noticed an option to
Delete Network locations, but am unsure what this does exactly, does it
unbind services from my NIC’s, which I DONT want to do.

Thanks for reading, Tony
