Volume Control sound broken.

Greetings,

My volume control icon (in the system tray) no
longer 'beeps' through the speakers (soundblaster value
card, et al) when I change the system volume. Instead it
makes a pathetic blicking noise through the internal PC
Speaker (or maybe modem?). Anyway, all the other sounds
work okay (Media players, outlook, messenger etc). Any
suggestions as to where I can start to troubleshoot this
problem? I've fiddle with all the volume PlayControl
options but with no luck. This one's a bit of a mystery.

See http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 6, Right column, Fix
the Ding.wav File for a small REG file that will correct this issue.
