Shaded gray areas will not let me access. Why?

volume properties, bass, treble controls

Any shaded grey box means the service is there but not
completely installed.Check for proper xp drivers,and/or
open device mgr,R.click the sound card,properties,chk
what the specific problem(s) show to fix.
