Posted: 02-08-2004, 12:38 AM
Hi,

googled quite a while without finding a working solution. Could anybody here
give me a clue ?
The remote system is solaris-9.

ronald-g4:~ ronr$ echo $DISPLAY
:0.0
ronald-g4:~ ronr$ ssh ronrsu01
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.
Last login: Sun Feb 8 01:33:45 2004 from ronald-g4
Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.9 Generic May 2002
$ echo $DISPLAY

$

thanks,

RonaId,

Sounds like X11Forwarding is set on your local sytstem, but there is no
X11 server running.

It's not really critical, unless you want to run X11 applications over
your ssh connection.

If you do, start X11 before connecting to the remote system.

Thanks for the reaction Joe, the xserver is running on the local
machine - and also on the remote. x11 forwarding to a linux machine
works, to a solaris-9 fails (DISPLAY has no value and starting xclock
etc. fails).

don't ask me why but X11Forwarding had a duplicate entry in sshd_config on
the remote - solaris - system. The first had no and the last had yes. I
expected the second one to over rule the fist one ... so I removed the second
entry and updated the first to "X11Forwarding yes" restarted the daemon et
voila !

I still do get the
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.
and this is a little unexpected for me; it seems to work now. Normally I
don't expect a warning when something succeeds. Maybe it has an important
meaning like 'encryption is not working' but I just don't lnow what it really
means.

Hmm.

Not sure what to suggest then. I only see that message if I'm not
running X11 on my PowerBook.

Does it still give that message if you initiate your connection from an
xterm running on the Mac?

Yes. It's a warning message and I don't know what it really means. The
forwarding is working now - there was a slight glitch in the solaris
sshd_config.
