Web sites blocked, Windows update blocked

Posted: 09-25-2007, 08:58 PM
I have a brand new Dell Vostro 1700 laptop.
I re-installed Vista Business yesterday, loaded on AVG anti virus. All was
ok.
Today, AVG won't update, I can't browse to microsoft.com (+others), and
Windows Update failes with code 8024402C.

All other machines on my network (wireless) are working ok, it's just this
one machine running vista (all others xp).
I can ping microsoft.com, but it doesn't work even if I type in the
xx.xx.xx.xx into my browser. It's the same for IE & Firefox, so it doesn't
sound like a browser issue.

Any ideas?
Some sort of virus?

See steps you can take to solve Windows Update error 8024402C.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...504611033.mspx
Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.

You may receive a "0x8024402C" error message when you scan for updates on
the Windows Update Web site

A misconfigured Proxy/Firewall can cause this problem. Double-check the
Proxy/Firewall settings

It turns out the problem is that Vista is not compatible with my NAT/firewall
(an old copy of Kerio).
After a couple more days it turns out my pro audio (tascam) system doesn't
have Vista drivers anyway.

So I've dumped Vista and gone back to XP-SP2 which works first time for
everything.

Why are you not using a NAT Router instead of a soft firewall that can
be exploited and hacked?

Get a NAT Router and you can use your computer with more safety than a
personal firewall APP provides.

Any router can be hacked, be-it hardware or software. The firewall software
I'm using is a corporate firewall, not some freebie personal one.

Anyway, the problem is with Vista not my firewall.

Most all NAT Routers are more/better tested than the Windows Firewall is
against all of the apps installed on your PC - there are less injection
points in a NAT router than your PC.

And just what "Corporate" firewall software are you using that you
believe is better?

Does the firewall allow YOU to create rules/exceptions?

Does the firewall allow the system/you create rules/exceptions to enable
you to use different networks that you might connect to?

Since every Vista PC we have, hundreds of them, has never had a problem
getting to Windows Update, and they are not using some personal firewall
app, then the problem is most likely your personal firewall and/or how
it's changed your settings.

Look, I'm not getting into a flamewar about my firewall is better than yours.

The firewall I originally mentioned has never been successfully penetrated.
yes it allows exceptions exacly as you mentioned. It has not been a problem
with Win98/ME/2K or XP.

The problem is that Vista is using the DHCP broadcast flag by default
whereas all previous versions of Windows didn't.

Of course all your Vista PCs aren't going to have a problem if your firewall
supports it. Mine doesn't and at the moment I can't afford the time or
effort to upgrade to one that does.

This is a new one. Please do explain what is a corporate FW. There is no
such thing as a corporate FW.

A corporate one as in one that is used for a corporation. One that supports
thousands of users simultaneously as opposed to a personal firewall that
supports one (or perhaps a few) at home.

What is going on here?

Am I being attacked by the Vista zelots?
