while playing dvd, about 1/2 thru it stops. Looked up in
error log and it says The device,\Device\cdRom1, has a
bad block. what does this mean? Can it be fixed?

Unreadable spot on the DVD. It can be either dirt on the bottom DVD surface,
then you can clean it. A scratch can be mended with a special repair kit.
But if the damage is on a data surface (scratch on the upper side, thermal damage...)
it can't be fixed

Anyway you deserve a special prize for using the eventlog

I'm confused now, It has done this on the last 3 DVD's
that I have tried to watch. I felt it was in my
equipment, due to happening on 3 different DVD's. Always
about half way thru.????

When I received that error message (bad block) I contacted the driver manufacturer. The drive was bad, it was replaced under warranty. Now the replacement is bad (bad block again). Yes, it only occurred with DVDs. Bought a new CD-RW/DVD and the DVDs that wouldn't play now do.

What kind of DVDs, are these commercial DVDs or are these copies of DVDs?
