What is happening here?

Dear Microsoft expert,

Recently, I have been experiencing a puzzling aspect of my microsoft
messenger.
When I leave my computer unattended for lunch, I come back to find the
messenger conversation window with a long list of people who seem to have
been chatting.

Often these are started by people who are not on my list. I wonder what is
going on here? I always feel violated when I see this. As I look at it, it
appears malicious. Please tell me what is it? Note I am an expat currently in
China at my office computer. It occurs at lightning speed and usually when I
am set to away
