Virtual Server 2005 R2. If you go to Microsoft Connections and locate the
Connection named
Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta
you can apply for the beta and then you can download and install the latest
available version. Be sure to download the one for your platform (x86 or
x64).

Before installing you must go to Add Windows Components and turn on
everything that has anything at all to do with IIS and web services (not
quite true but easier to understand). After installation you will need to
run a separate instance of IE7 with Run As Administrator in order to access
the Admin Web page. Then when you start VS the control screen will appear
in that instance of IE7.

There should be a beta of VPC 2007 available pretty soon that should run on
Vista without going through any hoops.

Thanks for your help. That's really helpful.

Is the SP1 Beta of Virtual Server 2005 R2 required for installation on Vista?
I've been trying to install VS 2005 R2, and the installer keeps wanting the
IIS Admin Service. I can't find anything in the Add Windows Components for
IIS that seems to map to IIS Admin Service. I do have IE7 running on the
Admin page while I'm trying this (and I'm running under the local
Administrator account).

Thanks

Never mind. I finally followed ALL of your advice (I just clicked every IIS
box in the Add Windows Components dialog, instead of trying to guess). I
imagine one of the IIS6 compatibility boxes did the ticket. Anyhow, after
restarting the install, I was able to get Virtual Server 2005 R2 installed.

But the first part of my question is still valid - should I move to the beta
of SP1? I don't have a CPU with virtualization support built in, so I won't
be able to take advantage of that improvement.

Thanks

Virtual PC 2004 also works on Vista RC-1 so far without any issues. This is
also free on the MS Downloads and is a little less complicated to install
and use (IMHO).

Cheers

Chris

Actually Virtual PC 2004 is not compatible with Aero glass, so if you run it
the desktop will flash and switch down to aero basic mode.

Thanks for that info, my graphics card is deemed not fast enough for Aero so
I am in the Basic mode - not had any issues with that so far.
