what is this 8 pins to 9 pins or 4 pins to 12 pins stuff?

The number of pins you need depends on the device you want to hook up. Most
camera's come with adapters for conversion between all the different pin
configurations.

Most PCI cards have 6 pin ports. Most notebook PCs with firewire ports have
the 4pin types. Most camcorders have 4pin ports.
