Whats that program's name

Posted: 12-28-2008, 11:53 AM
Someone posted something about a program that scans the vista files looking
for corruption of system files. Anyone know what that might be? I have been
all through the previous posts but cannot find it.

All of a sudden today I cannot read or write to my CD drive. About all it
does is eject under software control. I am thinking it's a bad driver.

Hi Bob,
You mean SFC, right?

You are probably looking for the system file checker (SFC). Take a look at
this link from my website:

Hi Bob,

The command is 'sfc /scannow' and it's done from an elevated command prompt.

However, I don't think this is your problem. Difficulty in reading/writing
to an optical drive usually traces back to either a dirty lens or a faulty
drive or connecting cable. For the lens, try a lens cleaner disk. Reseating
the cabling may help as well. Otherwise you may need to simply replace it.

Thanks everyone for the reply's! So far I have found out only CD's are
affected. I can still read/write DVD's. I tried SFC but that didn't show
anything. I also removed the drivers from the system and after rebooting
Vista found the drive and reinstalled the drivers. I still have to check the
registry as suggested. Do these multifunction drives have 2 lasers, one for
CD's & the other for DVD's? I assume cablings ok, but will check anyway. I
will also try cleaning the lenses. Wouldn't you know it, The warranty
expired 2 weeks ago. Acer's web site isn't much help.
