When close link, app closes too

Whenever I close a link I opened from a web site, email,
or other application, that web page, email, or other
application closes too. What setting might I have changed
in my messing around to cause this? How do I correct?
Didn't use to be this way. XP Home SP1 IE6. Thanks,
