What type of remote access are you wanting to set up? If it is Remote
Desktop, take a look at Al's links...

For a VPN, take a look at:

Jeffrey,

Thanks. Though I have a few questions and am hoping you can advise. I am
setting up a remote desktop and though the instructions are pretty good they
omit a few details. When I tested last night I could not get a connection
and Im not certain if I setup remoted desktop improperly or whether I needed
to add incomming VPN connections. So..

- I've set up the host machine to accept incomming VPN connections as your
posting suggested, is this necessary for remote destop?
- Under TCP properties Ive left the settings as is--that is DHCP to provide
IP address, is this advisable (or should I allow remote client computer to
specifiy IP address)?
- I've added the IP address of the client machine to my firewall settings to
allow it to pass thru, is this necessary or will simply setting up incomming
VPN connections be sufficient?

thx - daniel

You don't need to setup a VPN to use Remote Desktop. Simply enable RD on the target PC, forward TCP
Port 3389 incoming through any firewall/NAT/router (if applicable) and call using the public IP of
the PC or firewall/NAT/router...

I enabled RD on the host computer but after configuring client (i added
host ip address) was not able to connect leading me to believe i missed a
step (or two). do i need to forward port 3389 if im using a software
firewall? If so, the one im using does not make it apparent how to do that.
Can the cable modem on host side or wireless ap on client side be acting as
a firewall? if yes, how would i configure?

Thanks.
