Why cant I get my firewire IEEE 1394 to detect with Windows XP

Posted: 06-10-2004, 06:18 AM
I have a major problem, bought a brand new computer intel pentium 4 (3.0prescott), ati radeon 9600xt vga card, 512mb ddr ram, seagate 120 g sata hdd, pioneer dvd -+rw, gigabyte p1pe1000pro2 motherboard with in built fire wire so I can do some video editing.

The system came with the OEM windows xp home, I instored a few driver for the printer and scanner and aslo a usb driver for the JVC gr-d73aa dv camera.

After all this I connected the Dv camera and suprise windows doesnt detect anything at all. Think I got a bad computer system I took it back to my seller who tested it and showed me that the firewire works well. He networked it with other PCs with firewire and it worked fine, we tested it with my DV camera and it didnt detect at all.

So I took the computer home and tried another method I had a pyro firewire card and after instoring that it still didnt work, the computer wasnt able to detect the DV camera at all.

I checked for conflicts and found none, I re-instored the drivers again, I updated to the latest drivers, I updated all xp patches, I turned off all anti virus pulled out all the printer and scanner. None of this did anything.

Oh the usb connection is fine I can use that, and also I have an old computer which I put the Pyro card in it runs windows xp pro the first version when it was first released

The camera works fine with usb but just not with firewire. I have an older computer running an earlier version of windows xp pro and after I instored the pyro firewire card in it I could detect the Dv camera.

This makes me think that it much be a problem with the latest patch from microsoft or I must be going crazy. I have contacted JVC and they have also tested the camera and said nothing is wrong with it I have contacted mircosoft and they dont think its a problem with xp, i have contacted gigabyte and they think it has nothing to do with them.

So you can see I am really at a lost to why my computer can not detect a dv camera connected via firewire. Oh my DV camera is plugged on to a power supply and switched to view and this is done correctly.

Please can someone please help me, I dont know what else to do I want to use my Adobe Premiere Pro and the capture method is via firewire.

Please help

Have you tried a different firewire cable?

This is going to be one of those long drawn out affairs or.... we hit on
what it is and get it to work.
As you have said the cam works with an old pc, we can assume all the
component parts, ie, camera/cable are working properly.
We know there are no conflicts shown in device manager.

The first thing I'd suggest is uninstall the firewire connection.
Turn off pc.
Connect the cam, turn it on ready.
Reboot pc, let it find drivers and see if it detects the cam.

If this doesn't work, I'd be tempted to reinstall XP, and with no other apps
etc try the cam and see if it can detect it. Then gradually add each app and
or driver combination and check to ensure the cam works each time. Use
system restore to go back if you find one that makes it stp functioning.
Until you have your fully operational pc back.

One more thing to try that doesn't require uninstalling anything......

Right click on My Network Places and select Properties. There should be an
entry here for 1394 Connection. Right click on it and select Disable. Do
NOT select Uninstall. Since the 1394 card is still physically installed, XP
will just re-find it and reinstall the connection next time you restart.
You can network via firewire (though few people seem to)...... but I have
seen instances where the PC prioritizes the network connection over the
camcorder device. Reboot after the disabling of the 1394 network connection
and try once more to connect the camcorder.

Any better?

Yes, forgot that one, it may pay to have the cam connected again on reboot
to force it to see the cam instead of a network connection.

I have the same problem....but with a twist.
I have Premiere pro running on my main drive but due to adaware progs etc
running I installed xp on another drive and booted to that.
Now then Windows movie maker detects and activates my JVC GR D73EK and will
capture video and audio no problem whereas Premiere says that it cant
activate the device and that I should reset the dv camera,I've uninstalled
reinstalled disable enable everything that you lot have suggested but still
no luck.
The closest I have come is to being able to control the camera via the
software but not capture anything.
Damn all I've done is booted to a clean windows xp os and I'm at my wits
end too.........................................wheres the bloody
hammer????????
Strange thing is that we both have the same problem with the same camera.
Win xp,dual chan 3200,winfast ultra 5950 2.4 gig p4,dual bios gigabyte board
2x40 gig 1x 160 gig and a 200 gig hard drive asus dl dvd pioneer 106 and ples
2410a.....ans a crappy keyboard.
