Why can't I restart in safe mode with a command prompt?

Posted: 05-24-2004, 07:01 AM
I want to tweak my start menu, but to apply the changes I need to restart in safe mode with a command prompt. When I F8 during setup, it gives me a choice of 4 different drives (floppy, cdrw, dvd-rom, and hdd), but no other choices, and all of those will just start windows normally. The only thing I can think of is that the BIOS my mainboard came with has some sort of safety override to keep idiots like me from messing with the settings. The board is an ASUS P4P800S, and I'm running XP Home. Anybody know a way of getting a command prompt (can't use the one in windows, has to be before the explorer.exe file boots) on restart with this board? There's gotta be a way......

What exactly are you trying to tweak in your Start Menu that you need to
start in Safe Mode??

Your BIOS has nothing to do with Windows Safe Mode.

You should see a screen that looks like this >>

=================================
Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Chris,

it sounds like you're hitting F8 too soon.
You'll need to hit F8 after the system POSTs (that's the memory check or the
manufacturer's logo), but before tou see the Windows XP boot logo.

Incidently, why do you have to boot to Safe Mode with Command line? What
are you trying to do?
