Default why doesn't Windows Movie Maker like .mpg files?

I have a video camera that the video from it gets imported as .mpg files, and
Windows Movie Maker doesn't seem to like them. On my computer I get the
audio but no video, and on other computers I get a message about a missing
codec. The files work in the video editing software that came with the
camera, but Windows Movie Maker works a whole lot better for what I want to
do. Is there anything I can do to get the files to work in Windows Movie
Maker?

few users have success with them.... most have to convert MPEG-2 files to
others that work well....

Movie Maker doesn't come with an MPEG-2 decoder and relies on whatever else
is on your system... my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video > MPEG
page has suggestions for conversion

website references are to www.papajohn.org

Just out of curiosity, how much does the MPEG-2 codec cost? (I'm probably
going to convert the files but I was curious about the codec too)

Okay...I tried the VirtualDubMod and Panasonic DV codec that you recommended
on your website and it converted the video and now it works. Thank you!!!
