Will I need to F6 and install drivers?

Posted: 01-03-2007, 10:25 PM
I am running XP on a striped RAID drive, and I had to F6 and install drivers
during the install of XP. I am moving up to the 64-bit version of Vista,
and trying to get prepared.

Will Vista already contain the necessary RAID drivers, or will I need to
create a floppy with the drivers to install via F6 again?

I am using an intel D975XBX MB with a E6600 Core 2 Duo CPU.

Since you didn't tell us what RAID card you have, I'll use my mind-reading
powers and say ... "Maybe". ;-)

I am using the intel matrix storage manager built into the mother board for
the primary raid, and i also have a drive d secondary raid for backups using
the silicon image controller also built into the mother board.

Maybe Vista has these drivers already on-board. That would make the install
clean and easy....

If it turns out that you do need to install drivers (you probably will if
you needed to for XP) look for the "Load Drivers" button on the Setup screen
where you select a target partition. It will be in the lower left.
Function keys are no longer used during the initial stage of Setup.

Just remember that 32 bit device drivers will not work in a 64 bit install,
XP or Vista. You will have to have the 64 bit versions of the drivers.

I am running Silcon Image 3114 Sata Raid Controller and Vista does not
support it so I have to install from floppy or usb port. I you go that
method, Vista does not allow you to do an upgrade install.

This seems crazy to me after five years of development, you can't do an
upgrade install if Microsoft decided against putting certain drivers in
their release.

I do not understand the reasoning behing this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks,

Bill

Is the 3114 controlling the boot disc? If not you can install Vista, and
then install the 3114 drivers.

Yes, I can do a Clean install of Vista. It will NOT allow me to do an
Upgrade install. My point is, the USER should have the choice. I don't
understand Microsoft's motives here....

Be careful before you buy!

Bill, what edition of Windows are you attempting to upgrade? Some versions
cannot be upgraded and a custom install is required. These are the yellow
dots in the upgrade matrix on Get Ready. For example, you cannot upgrade XP
SP2 to Vista Ultimate x64 (x86 to x64 upgrade not supported). The upgrade
option will be disabled. Another example would be XP Pro SP2 to Vista Home
Premium x86 (loss of functionality).

I am upgrading from Win XP, SP2. The problem is with Vista, not XP. If you
have to install drivers with the "Load Driver" function, Vista will not
allow you to do an upgrade install. I am using Vista x86, not x64. Upgrade
to Vista Business not Home.
