win 2k to XP Pro - Remote Desktop over serial one way only

Posted: 10-13-2005, 05:26 PM
I have a WinXP Pro and a Win 2K system connected via null modem cable on com
1 (when I get this to work I will be putting modems between the two) I have
installed the latest remote desktop client on the win 2k system. I have also
used the DUN wizard to set up incomming connections on both systems.

1. If I sit at the XP Pro box and "dial" a remote connection to the Win 2K
box, I can then move to the win 2k box, run remote desktop and remotely
control the Xp Pro box.

2. If I sit at the Win 2k box and "dial" a remote connection to the XP Pro
box, everything connects ok - I can ping the xp pro box, but when I run the
remote desktop it says the remote computer is not accepting incomming remote
desktop connections.

3. In a nutshell remote desktop works fine, allowing a win2k box to remotely
control a win xp pro box, if the connection is initiated on the XP pro box.
This of course is unuseable because eventually the xp pro box will be remote
and I have to dial in to it

After exhaustive research, I have found that there is NO way to use Remote
Desktop to remotely control the Win2K machine. ( The SERVER (machine
being controlled) is the XP machine. You can install the CLIENT on any
other Windows version to connect to the XP SERVER but can not install a
server application to connect TO the Win2K machine. This REALLY p's me off!
