Win.Med.PLayer and distorted music. Frequencies ?

My Son of 10 has been playing an fiddling around with the XP windows mediaplayer
Now all music comes out distorted. The pitch of the singers is much t0o high as if Mickey Mouse is singing
The tempo (speed) however is normal. Maybe only high frequencies are played
The equalizer in the WMP Does not allow me to rectify it. whatever I try

I tried a lot of things to restore the original settings but I cannot find it
I tried to use another program for playing music (WINAMP) but it had the same distortio
I removed the media player and re-installed it but the error remains

Who can tel me how to restore the original settings ?? or anoher solution.
