Win XP - svchost uses 100% CPU

Posted: 07-25-2004, 07:02 PM
After just 5 minutes of general use, svchost suddenly
starts to run at 98% - 100% CPU usage. No known error
reported on MS Support Center; only advice is to run CMD
and type - tasklist /svc - to see what processes are
running, but I get message that tasklist is not a known
command. Any ideas? Hope someone can help as my AMD
2500 is now running like an XT!

Windows XP Home does not have tasklist.exe.
Download Tasklist.exe from:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/svchost.htm

Download Ad-Aware 6.0 and scan your PC for the presence of spyware:

Note: Be sure to click on the "Check for updates now" link before scanning.

i had the exact same problem, it is spyware if it is
svchosts.exe with an s on the end of the svchost then it
is spyware and it will use lots of cpu power and memory
if it is svchost.exe without an s on the end of the
scvhost then it is a registry program, scan in safe mode
using spyware removers and adware scanners if not find
the file and scan it indiviually as it can be associated
with viruses. Hope it helps!!

I have the same problem as Mike and none of the svchost.exe's that show up under the "Image Name" column on the "Processes" tab of the "Windows Task Manager" (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) have an S at the end of svchost. Any other ideas??
