WIndow XP wont install updates and stalls on programs

WHen I try and install updates..it downloads them but the
installer is greyed out when it goes to install them and
today I went to install a program..the first part of
install wizard came up but when it got to the part where
it said installing and the %'s came up it stalls there
and wont go any further.

There are no error messages.
I tried to find the Edb log but there isn't any and I
deleted the CatRoot2 folder like it said on Microsoft
support but neither worked.

HELP!!!!!! Please email me with any suggestions....
