Windows Audio Service Fails

Hi, hope someone can help. After downloading all the latest security updates
for Windows XP Home I lost all sound - with no devices showing up in 'Sounds
and Audio' devices. I tracked the problem down to the Windows Audio Service,
although it is set to automatic it is not starting so I manually start it and
everything works until the next reboot.
I have onboard sound - listed as Avance AC97 audio.

Hi, my name is David and ill be happy to assist you. To me that sounds like a
driver problem. First I'll need to know the type of computer you have and the
