Hi,

I purchased a game, Shellshock Nam 67....2nd hand.

When I tried to run the game I got the above error. Today XP thinks the game
is an audio CD ? What on earth is going on ?

I also tried to use the XP gaming site to check the compatability and the
program scanned my pc and said it couldnt complete the scan due to technical
difficulties..

Help ! PC is a Dell Dimension 5150C

Thanks Richard

Hi richy rock,

That type of error could mean the CD is corrupt... Check the CD
and the CD Player. Clean both using a Cleaning Kit, and check for
scratches on the CD. Try installing the game on another computer,
if the game installs, the culprit is probably your CD ROM drive if it
doesn't install then it's the CD, in which case you need to replace it.

Before replacing the CD, try copying it to your hard drive and then
run the setup / installation program from there. To copy the CD go
to My Computer, Right-Click the CD, Choose "Copy", then Right-
Click on your Hard Drive, Choose "Paste".

Uninstall the game using Add-Remove programs before attempting
to reinstall it. (Start / Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs).

Here are three basic troubleshooting steps which I recommend:

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using this utility: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
or this method: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com and then
install Windows Defender from: www.microsoft.com/spyware to
remove any Spyware or Adware which could clog up your PC.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

If nothing including those 3 steps have resolved the problem so far,
here's more basic troubleshooting steps and information including:
The Safedisc patch
How to check CD for imperfections, and
How to Disable Virtual CD rom drives which is described at:
http://tinyurl.com/2387c (EA General Support Page) and also:

How to Troubleshoot Disc-Reading Issues
Error Messages That May Be Caused by Disc-Reading Issues
Troubleshoot Error Messages
Examine the Disc
Clean the Disc
Test the Disc in a Different Drive
Clean the Drive

Hi Jimmy,

The CD is a replacement from the shop as I thought the first one was
knackered !

Why is it that when I browse it my PC thinks its an audio CD, kinda odd. I
can use the drive for CDs and thats fine...DVD are ok, its just for this
computer game.

I havent manage to install the game on the machine yet....

On the system logs under event viewer i have pages and pages of event 51..

Version: 5.0
Symbolic Name: IO_WARNING_PAGING_FAILURE
Message: An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation.

Explanation
An input/output (I/O) request to a memory-mapped file failed and the
operation was retried.

Does this give you any ideas?

Thanks for all your help so far....

Hi richy rock,

Focusing on the issue with the CD ...

Sounds like the CD's Autoplay is faulty or has been disabled.

Click My Computer, and then click on the CD Rom to start it.
If it still doesn't Autoplay, either right click it instead and choose
"AutoPlay" from the menu, or if that fails right click the CDRom,
choose "Explore" and click on the setup program. Good luck! :-)

If you want to repair this, download the Autoplay fix from:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...40/AutoFix.exe

Hi richy rock,

Yes, and No .. since you're having multiple issues on that
machine, you should attempt to repair Windows XP before
proceeding any futher.

How to repair Windows XP:
Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and

Hi richy rock,

Since you're starting to get results after attempting the repair install,
I would suggest running the repair again one or two times for it to
complete the repair process which it has evidentally started.

Pretty healthy CPU you've got there by the way! (P4 3GHz)

Test Disc Read with Copy or Xcopy
Quit Unnecessary Software
Switch the Drive Controller to DMA Mode, and

How to Troubleshoot DVD Error Messages is available in these articles: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=321641
