Windows Defender Definitions not Installing

Posted: 06-24-2006, 08:40 PM
I have been on same Definition since 6/7/2006. It will not update and gives
me an error every time.
Using this from Run does not fix it like it does in WinXP
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
I sent feedback to MS on this already. Does anyone else see this error ?
Windows Defender Definition fails on Update 1.14.1501.7, Error Code
80070005.
Error details that show up in the system tray
------
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002. The wrong
diskette is in the drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number: %3) into drive %1

Greg--

I assume you mean in Vista because in XP this issue is usually corrected by
installing Defender Beta 2 available at www.microsoft.com

It's a continuing known issue Redmonese for "we're shipping more crap
software we don't address for months." Note the issue on the public defener
newsgroup--why it is not accessable by NNTP newsreader is the stuff of
stupidity. There is no excuse for MSFT to make public newsgroups and
confine them to the primitive, clunky and poorly featured http newsgroup
format:

Can't update in General

http://tinyurl.com/rvfnh

They have a wimpy MSKB on this issue which does little to address it but not
specifically in Vista. If you try to reinstall Defender Beta 2 into a Vista
build, it won't accept it yet it has it and it is going to ship with it.

The only MSKB I can find is here, and it may not diectly help with your
error since there are variations on Defender not Updating:

Error message after you reinstall Windows Defender Beta 2: "Windows Defender
definitions haven't been updated"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105/en-us

I suggest you contact these individuals and ask them to support their
produc--they are Program Mangers on the Windows Defender team.

Program Managers for Windows Defender Team
Sterling Reasor
Tareq Saade
Jason Joyce
Jeff Williams Windows Defender Team Member Try JeffWilliams@microsoft.com
or addresses with the first letter and last name and ask them to start
putting relevant information out.

These individuals have known MSFT has an NNTP interface for years. They
have known this is an issue for months. They have known for years that
Convergys PSS either doesn't answer or is incomepetent when they do.

I also would note that if you have Win One Care Live that since WOC mandates
Defender be installed to stay green, they "support this." But there is a
huge problem. WOC live used to be supported by competent support personnel.
Now it has been tranferred to the MSFT garbage dumptster--their Convergys of
Ohio PSS support and when the router gets your call you will not be
connected to anyone. Not being connected to the Convergys personnel in
India may be a favor to you. This statement is not about Indian
competence,, it's about the competence of the minimum waged butss in seats
that Convergys chooses to hire. MSFT has a very =low opinion of their sub
enterprise customers and chooses to saddle them with support that is
incompetent or doesn't even connect on the phone. This paradigm is common
for Convergys--they do the same thing with respect to Delta Airlines, and
Symantec.

Microsoft has known this for years, but figures they have suckers who
provide their high quality support on newsgroups like these so quality
control of their PSS has never been viable.
