Windows Defender will nags, but no updates?

The following response did not show up in my newsgroups. I found it at
vista64.com. I'm sure that it shows for others here, but for those for whom
it does not, I re-quote it below. My response follows the quote:

Thanks for your response. Yes, the first thing I did was a manual update (I
have update set to notify, but not DL or install until I say so), and there
were no updates to be obtained. WD is the only spyware program I use. I
don't really have any others because I've always been careful where I browse
and what I DL. Also, I am behind a corporate firewall and security is fairly
decent. I am the only one who uses this network (with the exception of a
guest now and then) and have not had any issue in 15 years. Still, this
behaviour seems odd and I wonder if I've somehow been infected? Has anyone
heard of WD behaving in this manner?
