Windows disappear when minimizing

They just completely disappear, although continue to run and can only be
accessed through the ALT+TAB function.

Try this: Right click an open area of the desktop, and select
Arrange Icons By and look at the menu that drops down. There is
quite a bit more there than just arranging the desktop icons.
KB314227 may help you with this if I've picked the right one.

PS - It's not simply that you somehow dragged the top of thetaskbar all the way down, is it? Try using your moust to grab
the bottom most part of your screen and drag upwards with it.
