Windows don't use all of display area

my display is all there. when I make a window full
screen, it only covers part of the monitor's diplay area
(for instance all the way from top to bottom, but starts
at the left sie a stop's short of the right side by 2-3
inches). any windows that have part of thier surface in
that region on the right side are not clickable, etc.
I haven't installed anything lately, so I am at a loss.
